The first thing you’ll notice is that everything appears… strange. The operating system is named after the Big Sur coastal area on California’s Central Coast. To commemorate the shift, the operating system’s main version number was increased from 10 to 11 for the first time since 2000. It is also the first macOS version to enable ARM-based processors on Macs. Most significantly, macOS Big Sur contains a redesigned user interface with new blurs to build a visual hierarchy, as well as a revision of the Time Machine backup process, among other improvements. It was unveiled on June 22, 2020, at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), and it was released to the public on November 12, 2020.īig Sur is the successor of macOS Catalina, and it will be superseded by macOS Monterey on October 25, 2021. MacOS Big Sur (version 11) is Apple Inc.’s operating system for Macintosh computers.
